Avoyelles- A Trip Through Time

50 UNITED STATES

The Avoyelles Parish is an area that the Louisiana Tourism Board suggested that I visit. I can’t even put into words how glad I am that they suggested that I come to this beautiful and unique place. From it’s stunning architecture to it’s historic landmark’s this place is one of a kind. It’s also known for it’s French colonial history. You will see french influence not only in their language but the culture and food as well. I felt like I discovered this secret place which is why I found this place so very special.

Where to Eat- Sleep- Explore

Paragon Casino:

The Paragon Casino is a enormous casino on the Tunica Biloxi Reservation in Marksville. It has everything you can imagine from slot machines, to poker rooms, an indoor pool, spa, and even alligators in the lobby! Besides having a surplus of things to do it also has large and relaxing hotel rooms and delicious high end restaurants. If you are looking for somewhere to stay look no further the Paragon Casino is as good as it gets!

Northup Trail:

If you are not familiar with the story Solomon North he was enslaved in the Rapides and Avoyelles Parishes. He was abducted from his house in Glen Falls New York where he lived as a free man. He was then drugged and sold at a Slave Auction to a plantation owner in Louisiana. In 1853 he regained his freedom in Marksville by using an anti-kidnapping law. The trail is a total 82 miles long can take you on average two days to explore. Alot of monumental moments are located in Marksville. Take a walk through time and follow in the same footsteps as Solomon North. Don’t forget to stop by the courthouse which is where he was released as a freeman. If you go during the week and walk inside you are able to see the original court documents from the trial. If you want to know more about Solmon North you can also watch the movie 12 Years A Slave.

Fort DeRussy & For DeRussy Cemetery:

Fort DeRussy is located four miles North of Marksville. It was a fort that built in 1862 during the Civil War in order to defend the lower Red River Valley. It’s like walking through time when you come and visit. This place is also known to be haunted! However, I did not experience anything of the sort. I was able to give my respects to the soldiers who have passed and learn a bit more about the history of this historic fort which served the confederates. In 1994, it was officially labeled a historic site.

Big Daddy E’s:

Big Daddy E’s is a Cajun restaurant located inside of the Paragon Casino. One of the most famous places to eat inside the Casino is Legend’s Steakhouse. However, this place gives it a run for it’s money. The service and food were out of this world! For appetizers try the crawfish bread as it literally melts in your mouth. Also the assortment of sausages which were cooked to perfection. For entrees try the castfish with hushpuppies or the seafood lasagna. This place was absolutely amazing!
